What is gesture drawing?

Gesture drawing is quick figure sketching that captures a pose's movement, balance and direction rather than its details. Short time limits force you to look for the line of action and the big shapes first, which is why artists use 30-second to 2-minute poses as a daily warm-up. Mannequin line art strips away clothing and lighting, so only the pose itself is left to read.

How to practice

  1. Warm up with 10 poses at 30 seconds: one line of action and the head, ribcage and pelvis as simple shapes.
  2. Move to 1–2 minutes and add the limbs, checking where the weight falls.
  3. Finish with a few 5–10 minute poses to refine proportions and overlaps.
  4. Use a fixed angle, such as low or high, to drill one kind of perspective at a time.

Frequently asked questions

How long should each gesture drawing take?
Most artists start with 30 seconds to 2 minutes per pose. Short times train you to see the overall movement; longer 5–10 minute poses leave room for proportions and anatomy.
Do I need an account to practice?
No. Timed practice, browsing and search are free without an account. An account is only needed to download the original PNG files or save favorites.
Which poses and angles are included?
You can practice with every pose in the library or a single collection or category, from a fixed angle (front, three-quarter, side, high or low) or a random angle for each pose.
Can I use the keyboard?
Yes. Space pauses and resumes, the left and right arrow keys move to the previous or next pose, and Esc ends the session.
