Short Hairstyles

Short hair references, from bobs and mash cuts to wolf cuts: front-facing portraits against a plain background. The jaw, ears and nape stay visible, so the outline of the cut and how it meets the neck read clearly.

Drawing tips

  • Draw the outline of the whole head first, then cut the hair mass out of it: short hair follows the skull closely, with volume mostly at the crown and sides.
  • Check where the hem lands (jaw, ear or nape) and whether it is cut blunt or tapered; the hem line sets the character of the style.
  • Bangs and side hair frame the face: note where they cross the brows and how much of the ear and cheek they leave open.
